# Allocate vs. YNAB

YNAB is the best-known budgeting method in the world. Allocate is a plan that moves around a paycheck that doesn’t arrive as one number. Here’s how they differ.

YNAB is a discipline: give every dollar you already have a job, and keep the envelopes current. It rewards the effort, and a lot of people love the effort. Allocate takes the effort out: you say what you want in plain words, it writes the plan and proposes the changes, and you approve them. If you like maintaining a budget, YNAB is the better YNAB. If you want to ask a question and get a plan back, that’s Allocate.

## What YNAB is

YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a zero-based budgeting app built around four rules: give every dollar a job, embrace your true expenses, roll with the punches, and age your money. You assign only money you already have, so the budget is always about cash on hand, never a forecast. It costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, with a 34-day trial and no free tier, and it runs on web, iOS, Android and Apple Watch. Up to six people can share one subscription. It is privately held and has been shipping steadily in 2026 — smart categorization, a card mode, a plan reset.

## What Allocate is

Allocate is a personal-finance app built so you can plan in plain language. You link your accounts (Plaid), then you talk: *“can I afford a $600 flight in November?”*, *“move the house goal out a year”*, *“what happens if I put $400 more into the 401(k)?”* Allo-Bot answers from your real numbers and, when something should change, stages the change for you to approve. It never moves money.

Around the conversation are three things we haven’t seen elsewhere. **My plan** is a written plan — your goals, in order, with what each takes a month and when it lands — that reads like a document, not a dashboard. **Workspace** is a board you build from your own data: pin a card for any number, a note beside it, a sheet with live cells, and ask the guide to break a figure down onto the board. And a **morning brief** tells you what moved and what needs a yes, so you don’t have to go looking. Pay that comes in pieces — a bonus, a commission, a vest — is handled as income in the plan, not a surprise deposit.

The point of all of it is that a plan should be liquid. A raise, a move, a baby, a job change, a bad month: you say what changed, and the plan moves — goals re-dated, amounts re-sized, the brief the next morning telling you where things stand. It’s not a budget to keep up; it’s a plan that keeps up with you. One price, US only, web and iPhone.

## Where YNAB is better

- **The method.** If zero-based envelopes work for you, nothing does them better. The four rules are a complete philosophy, and the community and education around them are unmatched.
- **Android and Apple Watch.** Allocate is web and iPhone today.
- **Household sharing.** YNAB Together puts up to six people on one budget at no extra cost. Allocate is one person per account.
- **Price.** $109 a year against Allocate’s $240. YNAB also has a 34-day trial with no card.
- **Offline and manual.** YNAB is happy without bank sync at all; many users prefer entering every transaction by hand.

## Where Allocate is better

- **You talk, it plans.** YNAB has no assistant; every category, target and adjustment is yours to make. In Allocate you say *“I want $15,000 for a wedding by next June”* and Allo-Bot stages the goal, sizes the monthly amount against what comes in, and shows you what it does to the goals behind it. You tap approve.
- **Built to change.** Life doesn’t hold still and YNAB asks you to re-do the envelopes when it moves. In Allocate you say *“we’re moving in March and rent goes up $700”* and the plan re-dates and re-sizes itself around it, with the changes staged for your yes.
- **A plan you can read.** YNAB is a grid of categories. My plan is a written document: your goals in order, what each takes a month, when it lands, what changed since last month. Share it with a partner or an advisor as-is.
- **Workspace.** Pin any figure to a board, put a note beside it, break it down one level with the guide, run a sheet with live cells. YNAB has reports; nothing there is yours to arrange.
- **Money you haven’t received yet.** YNAB’s rule is don’t budget it until it lands. Allocate treats a March bonus or a May vest as expected income that can fund a goal now, and warns if a goal outruns what’s actually coming in.
- **Less homework.** YNAB’s most repeated complaint is the hours to set up and the attention to keep. Allocate reads your accounts, writes you a brief each morning, and only asks for a yes.
- **Day one, before a bank.** Tell it your take-home and pay rhythm and every page plans from that; the real numbers replace it the morning after you link.

## Which one should you pick?

**Pick YNAB if**

- You already use the envelope method and like it.
- You budget on Android, or as a household.
- You want the cheaper subscription.
- You prefer to enter transactions by hand and stay offline.

**Pick Allocate if**

- You’d rather say what you want than build it by hand.
- You want a plan you can read, not a grid to reconcile.
- You want an assistant that stages the change and waits for your yes.
- Some of your pay is bonus, commission or equity.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Allocate a zero-based budget like YNAB?

No. YNAB assigns every dollar you already have. Allocate builds a plan from what you take home and what you expect — salary, bonus, vests — and measures each goal against it month by month. You can still see what’s free to spend, but you’re not maintaining envelopes.

### Can I import my YNAB budget into Allocate?

Not directly. Allocate rebuilds from your bank accounts through Plaid, so the history comes from your bank rather than from YNAB’s categories. Your goals you enter once, or tell Allo-Bot and it stages them for you.

### Does Allocate work without a bank connection?

Yes, from an estimate: you tell it your take-home and how often you’re paid at setup, and every page plans from that until an account is linked. YNAB also works without sync, by manual entry.

### Which is cheaper?

YNAB: $109 a year, or $14.99 a month. Allocate: $240 a year ($20 a month paid yearly), or $25 monthly. Allocate’s price includes 100 Allo-Bot messages a month; packs of more start at $5.

### Does either app move my money?

Neither. YNAB and Allocate both read your accounts and never transfer funds. Allocate’s assistant proposes changes to your plan, not to your bank.

We wrote this comparison. We tried to be fair, and every YNAB claim links to where we read it, but we make Allocate, so read it as one side of the argument and try both.
