# Clawback

A contract term that requires you to repay money you already received, most often a sign-on bonus or relocation payment, if you leave too soon.

A clawback is the fine print that turns a gift into a loan. The most common version: your sign-on bonus or relocation reimbursement must be repaid if you leave, or are fired for cause, within a set period, usually 12 or 24 months. Some clawbacks fade gradually (repay 100% in the first six months, 50% after that), and some are all-or-nothing until the last day.

The detail that stings is that repayment is often the gross amount. You received $20,000 minus roughly $6,000 of withholding, but the agreement says you owe $20,000. You can usually recover the tax through an adjustment on your return, but that takes months and the check to your old employer is due now.

Clawbacks also show up in executive pay tied to financial results, in tuition reimbursement, and occasionally in retention bonuses. Wherever one exists, the money is not fully yours until the clock runs out.

The practical move is to treat the clawback amount like a debt that expires. Keep it somewhere you could reach it until the period ends, or at least know the exact date after which it is safe. The common mistake is discovering the clause during an exit conversation, after the money has become a couch and a vacation.
