# Safe to spend

In Allocate, the money that is genuinely free between now and your next payday, after bills and goal contributions are already covered.

Safe to spend is the one number Allocate keeps at the front. It answers the question that a bank balance cannot: of the money in my account, how much can I actually use without shorting something? The balance includes rent that is due Friday and the $400 that is supposed to go to the vacation goal. Safe to spend does not.

The calculation runs from today to your next payday. Allocate starts with what is in your spending accounts, subtracts every bill due before the next paycheck lands, subtracts the contributions your plan has scheduled for your goals in that window, and shows what is left. That remainder is safe to spend. It refreshes as transactions come in, so a $60 dinner lowers it by $60 tonight, not at the end of the month.

An example: $3,100 in checking on the 3rd, payday on the 15th. Rent of $1,900 is due on the 5th, utilities of $180 on the 10th, and $350 goes to goals on the 8th. Safe to spend is $670 for the next twelve days.

The design choice is to measure paycheck to paycheck rather than month to month, because that is how money actually arrives for most people, and because biweekly pay makes monthly budgets drift. Expected income events, such as a bonus landing on the 12th, extend the number on the day they arrive, not before.

The common mistake it prevents is spending against a balance that was already spoken for, which is how a good month turns into an overdraft on the 28th.
