# How to budget for a baby

Five steps for the nine months before and the year after: the one-time costs, the new monthly line, the leave gap in income, and how the plan settles.

A baby changes a budget twice: once in a lump before the birth, and then permanently in the monthly plan. People plan the lump — the crib, the car seat — and get surprised by the monthly, and by the third thing nobody mentions: the months of reduced income during leave. This guide plans all three.

## Price the one-time costs, and the medical bill

Gear is $1,500–$4,000 depending on how much is new. The bigger one-time cost is medical: with typical employer insurance, expect to hit the deductible and possibly the out-of-pocket maximum in the birth year — often $3,000–$8,000. Check your plan's out-of-pocket max; that's the number, and it's a [sinking fund](https://allocateai.io/glossary/sinking-fund) with a due date nine months out.

If you have an [HSA](https://allocateai.io/glossary/hsa), front-load it this year; it pays the bill with pre-tax dollars.

## Map the leave: how many weeks, at what pay

This is where plans break. Write down, for each parent: paid leave weeks at full pay, weeks at partial pay (state programs and short-term disability often pay 60–70%), unpaid weeks. Turn it into a month-by-month income line. Twelve weeks with six at full pay and six at 60% is roughly a $4,000 dip for someone taking home $8,000 a month.

The dip is a known, dated shortfall. Fund it in advance, from a sinking fund, the same way you'd fund a deposit. That's the difference between leave and debt.

## Build the new monthly line before the baby arrives

Childcare is the one that changes everything: $1,200–$2,800 a month for full-time care in most US cities, and it starts when leave ends. Add diapers, formula if used, a higher grocery line, a higher insurance premium for the family plan, and the 529 contribution if you're starting one. For many households the new monthly line is $1,500–$3,500.

Start "paying" that line now, into the sinking fund. If the plan can't absorb $2,000 a month today, it can't in a year either — and finding that out now, with nine months to fix it, is the whole point.

## Decide what gives, with an end date

Something in the plan makes room for the new line. Typical: the travel fund pauses for two years, the extra debt payment drops to the minimum until childcare ends, the house fund slows. Put an end date on each — "resumes when childcare drops at kindergarten" is a real date, five years out. Keep the [401(k) match](https://allocateai.io/glossary/employer-match) and the [emergency fund](https://allocateai.io/glossary/emergency-fund) whole; both matter more with a dependent, not less.

## Re-plan at three months, then settle

The first three months are chaos and the spending shows it. Don't re-plan in month one. At three months, look at what the real monthly line turned out to be — it's usually within 15% of the estimate, with the surprise in a category you didn't expect — and set the plan to that. Then leave it alone. A baby budget that's re-planned monthly is a source of stress, not a plan.

## The plan, in Allocate

You'd say: "Baby due in August. I get 12 weeks at 60% pay, my partner gets 4 at full. Daycare will be about $1,900." Allo-Bot proposes:

- Sinking fund: baby, $14,000 by August — out-of-pocket max $6,000, gear $2,500, leave shortfall $5,500.
- Monthly until August: $1,550 into the sinking fund; the plan runs as if the new line already existed.
- From November (leave ends): childcare $1,900, family premium +$180, groceries +$150, 529 $100 — new line $2,330.
- Paused: travel fund until the child is two; extra car-loan payment drops to the minimum. House fund slows from $900 to $500. 401(k) stays at the match.
- Review: a check-in note in the brief three months after the due date, to re-set the line to actuals.

When the daycare quote comes in at $2,300, you say so; the plan proposes where the $400 comes from — and waits for your yes.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a baby cost in the first year?

One-time costs are typically $5,000–$12,000 including the medical out-of-pocket maximum, and the ongoing monthly line is $1,500–$3,500 once childcare starts. The leave income gap is often the largest single number and the one most often left out.

### Should we start a 529 right away?

Only after the emergency fund is whole and the 401(k) is at the match. A 529 started at birth with $100 a month is worth a lot at 18, but it's a long goal; the leave gap and childcare are near goals and come first.

### How do we budget for unpaid leave?

Treat it as a dated shortfall: weeks × the pay you won't receive, funded in advance into a sinking fund. It's the same method as a deposit — the date is known, so it's a plan, not a surprise.
