# How to build an emergency fund fast

Five steps to a real emergency fund: the right target (essentials, not income), where to keep it, how to fund it in months rather than years, and when it's done.

An [emergency fund](https://allocateai.io/glossary/emergency-fund) is the one goal that makes every other goal safe. Without it, a car repair becomes a card balance, and the card balance becomes the reason the house fund stalled. With it, the same repair is a bad week. The goal is boring by design; getting there fast is the interesting part.

## Set the target on essentials, not income

The target is three to six months of *essential* spending: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments, transportation, childcare. Not your full spending, and not your income. If essentials are $4,200 a month, three months is $12,600 and six is $25,200.

Three months if you have two stable incomes; six if there's one earner, variable pay, a dependent, or an industry that moves fast. The difference between three and six is whether a job loss is a search or a crisis.

## Get to one month first, fast

The first month is the hardest and the most valuable — it's the difference between a surprise going on a card and not. Get there in 60–90 days by treating it as a sprint: the next bonus or refund, anything sold, and a temporary pause on every other goal, including extra debt payments above the minimum. One month of essentials in the account, then the sprint ends.

## Keep it where it can't be spent by accident or lost

A high-yield savings account at a different bank from your checking. Different bank so it isn't one tap away; high-yield so it earns 4% instead of nothing ([APY](https://allocateai.io/glossary/apy-vs-apr) is the number to compare). Not stocks, not a CD with a penalty, not the checking account it will quietly leak from.

## Automate the rest, and point the lumps at it

After month one, set a transfer on payday — even $300 — and let it run. Then aim every lump at it until it's done: a bonus, a [vest](https://allocateai.io/glossary/rsu), a tax refund. A $4,200-a-month household with a $300 transfer and one $5,000 bonus reaches three months in about 18 months; with two $5,000 lumps, in about eight.

Compare it in the [compound interest calculator](https://allocateai.io/calculators/compound-interest) with your numbers — the lumps, not the rate, are what move the date.

## Define "done," and what happens after

Done is the target number in the account. When it's reached, the transfer doesn't stop — it moves to the next goal, at the same amount, the same day. That's the trick: the saving habit is already built; you just re-point it. And when the fund gets used (it will), the same transfer turns back toward it until it's whole.

## The plan, in Allocate

You'd say: "I have $1,800 saved and $4,200 a month of essentials. Get me to three months as fast as possible." Allo-Bot proposes:

- Goal: emergency fund, $12,600 (three months of essentials), high-yield savings at 4%. $1,800 in hand.
- Sprint to one month ($4,200): $600 a month plus the March tax refund (~$1,400). Reached in April. Extra card payment pauses until then.
- After April: $400 on each payday, automated.
- Expected income: bonus in June, ~$5,000 after tax → emergency fund.
- Done: next January. The $400 transfer then re-points to the house fund the same day.

If the fund gets used — "the car needed $1,100" — the plan proposes turning the transfer back toward it and re-dates the house fund, staged for your yes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I build an emergency fund or pay off debt first?

One month of essentials first, always — it's what stops the next surprise from adding to the debt. Then, if the debt is above roughly 10%, alternate: minimums plus a small automatic transfer to the fund, with extra toward the debt. Below 10%, finish the fund.

### Is three months enough?

With two stable incomes and no dependents, usually. With one income, variable pay, a dependent, or a volatile industry, six. The question is how long a job search would take and what you'd need to cover in the meantime.

### Where should I keep an emergency fund?

A high-yield savings account at a different bank from your checking: earning around 4%, insured, reachable in a day or two, and not one tap away.
